To rival with the city of Tallinn in the control of trade in the Baltic Sea, King Gustav I of Sweden founded the city of Helsinki in 1550. Sometimes as possession of Sweden, sometimes as russian autonomous province of Finland, the country became definitely independent in 1917, taking Helsinki as the capital and seat of government. The marks of these influences remained through classic architectural design, as Cathedral (Lutheran) of neo-classical style, the cathedral Russian Orthodox Uspenski, the set of Senate Square, the University b>. In Suomenlinna, still exists the ancient fortress located in the port of the city, built by the Swedes to defend Finland during wars, especially against the Russians. With a density of 819 inhabitants per square kilometer (In Paris is 20 696), Helsinki attracts visitors and tourists because of it's rich cultural offer: The National Museum (Kansallismuseo), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Kiasma), the Museum of Classical Art (Ateneum) and the Museum of Natural History; The Finnish National Theatre, the Helsinki City Theatre and the SwedishTheatre; Frequent art festivals, as the one that will take place in mid-August 2013.
